NEWS RELEASE

TRIP TO VANCOUVER TO STUDY ORGANIZED CRIME

Ottawa, April 06, 2009 -

COMMITTEE MANDATE

On February 9, 2009, the Committee agreed:

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), it is moved that the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights devote four sittings to study the state of organized crime in Canada and the consequential legislative amendments that should be made.

That the Chair report his conclusions and recommendations to the House.

As part of its study of organized crime, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights will be travelling to Vancouver for hearings on Thursday, April 30, 2009. These hearings are being held so that members of the Committee can get a first-hand look at the organized crime issue in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The Committee hopes to hear from a wide variety of witnesses, including victims of organized crime violence, law enforcement officials, academics, and even former gang members. With this knowledge in hand, the Committee anticipates that it will be better able to provide advice as to how the law on organized crime in Canada may be improved.
