A PROSPEROUS AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR CANADA: NEEDED FEDERAL ACTIONS
Ottawa, December 09, 2009 -
Today, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance tabled its report on the pre-budget consultations that it has conducted over the past three months. The report, entitled A Prosperous and Sustainable Future for Canada: Needed Federal Actions, contains recommendations designed to position Canada’s people, businesses and communities for the prosperous and sustainable future that we all seek.
“The global financial crisis has impacted countries around the world to varying degrees, and Canada has fared well compared to other industrialized countries. However, it must be acknowledged that our nation’s fiscal outlook is more challenging today than it was before the global slowdown struck Canada,” said James Rajotte, Chair of the Committee. “Federal tax cuts and program spending have stimulated our economy, but the recovery in Canada and in our major trading partners is still very fragile. Our exporters and their domestic suppliers will continue to feel the impact of weakened demand in markets around the globe, and federal tax and spending decisions will need to reflect the fiscal realities facing us in the short term.”
During the pre-budget consultations, the Committee heard from over 450 groups and individuals in hearings held across the country. “The report, and the deliberations by the Committee, would not have been possible without the thoughtful contributions of these groups and individuals, who made written and/or oral presentations to us,” Mr. Rajotte added. “Certainly, on behalf of the Committee, I would like to thank everyone who took the time to provide us with their ideas about the measures that should be included in the next federal budget.”
