The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met in a televised session at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, David Tilson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua, Paul Calandra, Olivia Chow, Jean Dorion, Rick Dykstra, Nina Grewal, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Devinder Shory, Thierry St-Cyr, David Tilson and Alice Wong.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Denis Coderre for Alexandra Mendes.

 

Associate Members present: Don Davies.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sandra Elgersma, Analyst; Daniel Thompson, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism.

 

Witnesses: Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Richard Fadden, Deputy Minister; Wayne Ganim, Chief Financial Officer, Finance Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the Main Estimates 2009-2010: Votes 1, 5 and 10 under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION referred to the Committee on Thursday, February 26, 2009.
 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(5), the Committee commenced consideration of the Supplementary Estimates (C) 2008-2009: Votes 1c and 5c under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION referred to the Committee on Thursday, February 12, 2009.
 

The Minister made a statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

 

The Chair called Vote 1c under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION.

 

Olivia Chow moved, — That Vote 1c be reduced by $3,000,000.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Olivia Chow and it was negatived on the following recorded division: YEAS: Olivia Chow — 1; NAYS: Maurizio Bevilacqua, Paul Calandra, Denis Coderre, Jean Dorion, Rick Dykstra, Nina Grewal, Jim Karygiannis, Devinder Shory, Thierry St-Cyr, Alice Wong — 10.

 

Vote 1c under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION carried.

 

The Chair called Vote 5c under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION.

 

Vote 5c under CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION carried.
