The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 11:08 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Gary Ralph Schellenberger, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Charlie Angus, Rod Bruinooge, Dean Del Mastro, Jacques Gourde, Carole Lavallée, Roger Pomerleau, Pablo Rodriguez, Gary Ralph Schellenberger and Tim Uppal.

 

Acting Members present: Paul Calandra for Nina Grewal, Hon. Maria Minna for Ruby Dhalla and Massimo Pacetti for Scott Simms.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michael Dewing, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Friday, March 6, 2009, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-302, An Act to recognize the injustice that was done to persons of Italian origin through their “enemy alien” designation and internment during the Second World War, and to provide for restitution and promote education on Italian-Canadian history.
 

Honourable Jason Kenney made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 12:11 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:13 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceed to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee calls on the Government of Canada to help facilitate, to the best of its ability, the establishment of a timely and equitable resolution to the labour dispute between the 420 employees of the Museum of Civilization and the Canadian War Museum who make up Public Service Alliance of Canada Local 70396 and the museums’ management, and that this motion be reported to the House.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee begin, on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, the clause by clause consideration of Bill C-302, An Act to recognize the injustice that was done to persons of Italian origin through their “enemy alien” designation and internment during the Second World War, and to provide for restitution and promote education on Italian-Canadian history.

 

At 12:31 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
