The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Roy Cullen, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Sue Barnes, Bonnie Brown, Gord Brown, Hon. Roy Cullen, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Dave MacKenzie, Colin Mayes, Rick Norlock, Penny Priddy and Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac.

 

Acting Members present: Robert Bouchard for Serge Ménard.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Philippe Bergevin, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Royal Canadian Mounted Police: Mike Cabana, Chief Superintendent, Director General, Border Integrity, Federal and International Operations Directorate. Canada Revenue Agency: Pierre Bertrand, Director General, Excise and GST/HST Ruling Directorate, Legislative Policy and Regulatory Affairs Branch; Phil McLester, Director, Excise Duties and Taxes Division, Excise and GST/HST Rulings Directorate, Legislative Policy and Regulatory Affairs Branch. Department of Finance: Geoff Trueman, Chief, Air Travelers Security Charge, Sales Tax Division, Tax Policy Branch; Ken Medd, Senior Tax Policy Officer, Aboriginal Tax Policy Section. Canada Border Services Agency: David Quartermain, Director, Borders Intelligence Division, Intelligence Directorate, Enforcement Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, April 14, 2008, the Committee commenced its study of Contraband tobacco.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hear on May 12 and 14, 2008, the witnesses that had been scheduled to appear on May 5, 2008.

 

At 5:09 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
