The Standing Committee on Natural Resources met by videoconference at 11:08 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Omar Alghabra, Mike Allen, David Anderson, Catherine Bell, Leon Benoit, Ken Boshcoff, Claude DeBellefeuille, Lloyd St. Amand, Alan Tonks and Bradley R. Trost.

 

Acting Members present: Gérard Asselin for Christian Ouellet, Hon. Joe Comuzzi for Richard Harris and Barry Devolin for Mike Allen.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Fréderic Beauregard-Tellier, Analyst; Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Buchanan Lumber Sales: John Adams, Transportation Manager; Hal Brindley, President. Forest Products Association of Canada: Marta Morgan, Vice-President, Trade and Competitiveness; David W. Church, Director, Transportation, Recycling and Purchasing. Terrace Bay Pulp Inc.: Hartley Multamaki, Vice-President, Planning and Development. Buchanan Pulp Sales: Pino Pucci, President.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, December 11, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of the unique opportunities and challenges facing the forest products industry.
 

Marta Morgan, Hartley Multamaki and Pino Pucci made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Bradley R. Trost moved, — That the Committee report the following to the House of Commons:

"Your Committee has heard evidence from a number of representatives of the forestry industry and believes that it would be in the public interest for the Minister of Natural Resources to convene a Round Table Conference on the future of the Canadian Forest Industry".

Debate arose thereon.

 

It was agreed, — That the debate be now adjourned and that it resume on Thursday, April 3, 2008.

 

At 1:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
