The Standing Committee on Natural Resources met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Omar Alghabra, Mike Allen, David Anderson, Leon Benoit, Ken Boshcoff, Richard Harris, Christian Ouellet, Lloyd St. Amand and Alan Tonks.

 

Acting Members present: Gérard Asselin for Claude DeBellefeuille, Hon. Joe Comuzzi for Bradley R. Trost and Tony Martin for Catherine Bell.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Fréderic Beauregard-Tellier, Analyst; Jean-Luc Bourdages, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Maritime Lumber Bureau: Diana Blenkhorn, President and Chief Executive Officer. Township of James and Town of Elk Lake: Jeff Barton, Community Development Forester; Terry Fiset, Reeve, Township of James; George Lefebvre, Community Development Advisor. Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society: Tim Gray, Chair, Conservation Committee of the Board. McMaster University: Robert Pelton, Professor of Chemical Engineering. SENTINEL Bioactive Paper Network: George Rosenberg, Managing Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, December 11, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of the unique opportunities and challenges facing the forest products industry.
 

Tim Gray, Jeff Barton, Terry Fiset, Robert Pelton and Diana Blenkhorn made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the consideration of the draft report on the unique opportunities and challenges facing the forest products industry be completed by Saturday, April 12, 2008; and that immediately thereafter, the Committee resume consideration of its study on nuclear safety issues, including safety issues at the Chalk River nuclear reactor.

 

At 1:10 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
