The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met at 11:02 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Shawn Murphy, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: David Christopherson, Brian Fitzpatrick, Mark Holland, Hon. Charles Hubbard, Jean-Yves Laforest, Mike Lake, Marcel Lussier, Hon. Shawn Murphy, Pierre Poilievre, David Sweet, John Williams and Borys Wrzesnewskyj.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Alex Smith, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: As individuals: Janice Cochrane; Gary E. Polachek.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(g), the Committee resumed consideration of Chapter 7, Acquisition of Leased Office Space of the May 2006 Report of the Auditor General of Canada referred to the Committee on May 16, 2006.
 

Janice Cochrane made statement and with the other witness, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Borys Wrzesnewskyj moved, — As the Auditor General’s report of October 2008, Chapter 4 noted that 75% of soldiers who had reported mental health problems or disorders did not receive sufficient help; and Brigadier General Hilary Jaeger noted in her testimony that 27% of returning soldiers from Afghanistan have mental health issues ranging from substance abuse to depression and post-traumatic stress disorder; therefore the Public Accounts Committee calls upon the Auditor General to do an audit of the military health care provided to returning soldiers from operations in Afghanistan, with a special emphasis on the 27% screened to have significant mental health issues.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: David Christopherson, Mark Holland, Charles Hubbard, Jean-Yves Laforest, Marcel Lussier, Borys Wrzesnewskyj — 6; NAYS: Brian Fitzpatrick, Mike Lake, Pierre Poilievre, David Sweet, John Williams — 5.

 

At 1:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
