The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 9:04 a.m. in camera this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Jacques Gourde, Mike Lake, Yves Lessard, Tony Martin, Michael Savage, Hon. Judy Sgro and Lynne Yelich.

 

Acting Members present: Tina Keeper for Rodger Cuzner, Ed Komarnicki for Hon. Michael D. Chong, Louis Plamondon for France Bonsant, Denise Savoie for Tony Martin, Brent St. Denis for Ruby Dhalla and Roger Valley for Rodger Cuzner.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr, Analyst; Chantal Collin, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 9:07 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:07 a.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

Yves Lessard moved, — That the Committee recommend to the government, in view of the serious crisis in the forestry and manufacturing sectors, that it implement without delay an improved assistance plan for the forestry and manufacturing sectors, including $1.5 billion in support measures for workers affected by the crisis, including $60 million for an income support program for senior workers and a $1.44 billion reserve for the employment insurance fund to be placed in a special fund until an independent fund is created; and that the adoption of this motion be reported to the House at the earliest opportunity.

Debate arose thereon.

 

It was agreed, — That debate be adjourned until immediately after the Finance Committee has completed its study of this issue.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, November 26, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of Employability in Canada.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.
