The Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in camera at 9:07 this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, France Bonsant, Rodger Cuzner, Jacques Gourde, Mike Lake, Yves Lessard, Michael Savage, Hon. Judy Sgro and Lynne Yelich.

 

Acting Members present: Denise Savoie for Tony Martin.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Chantal Collin, Analyst; Kevin Kerr, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 9:11, the sitting was suspended.

At 9:11, the sitting resumed in public.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Yves Lessard, — That the Committee recommend to the government, in view of the serious crisis in the forestry and manufacturing sectors, that it implement without delay an improved assistance plan for the forestry and manufacturing sectors, including $1.5 billion in support measures for workers affected by the crisis, including $60 million for an income support program for senior workers and a $1.44 billion reserve for the employment insurance fund to be placed in a special fund until an independent fund is created; and that the adoption of this motion be reported to the House at the earliest opportunity.

The debate continued.

 

Michael Savage moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the words “in view of the serious crisis in the forestry and manufacturing sectors” the following: “and the inadequate response of the government to date” and by deleting the words “including $1.5 billion in support measures for workers affected by the crisis, including $60 million for an income support program for senior workers and a $1.44 billion reserve for the employment insurance fund to be placed in a special fund until an independent fund is created”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 10:20, the sitting was suspended.

At 10:27, the sitting resumed.

 

Mike Lake moved, — That the amendment be amended by replacing the words “and the inadequate response of the government to date” with the words “and 13 years of inaction by the previous Liberal government, under whose leadership we probably still would not have a softwood lumber agreement” and by deleting the word “improved” .

Debate arose thereon.

 

It was agreed, — That the debate be adjourned until the next meeting.

 

At 10:57, the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
