The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Yasmin Ratansi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Hon. Anita Neville, Glen Douglas Pearson, Yasmin Ratansi and Bruce Stanton.

 

Acting Members present: Johanne Deschamps for Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac, Nancy Karetak-Lindell for Hon. Anita Neville and James Lunney for Inky Mark.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Clara Morgan, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Status of Women Canada: Clare Beckton, Coordinator, Office of the Coordinator; Dawn Nicholson-O'Brien, Deputy Coordinator, Office of the Coordinator; Cindy Paquette, Director, Corporate Services Directorate.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(5), the Committee commenced consideration of the Supplementary Estimates (A) 2007-2008: Votes 95a, 100a and 101a under CANADIAN HERITAGE referred to the Committee on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 and pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced consideration of the Performance Report 2007-2008 of STATUS OF WOMEN CANADA.
 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Bruce Stanton, it was agreed, — That the Committee adopt the proposed budget in the amount of $ 39,102, for its study on Gender Budgets.

 

Nicole Demers moved, — That, after the Standing Committee on the Status of Women will have studied the 3 reports from the other committees on the Court Challenges Program, that the committee study the impacts of the cut over the Court Challenges Program on women and more particularly those belonging to the minorities and aboriginal women.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, November 26, 2007, the Committee commenced its study on Trafficking of Women and Children During the 2010 Olympics.
 

Anita Neville moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) the Standing Committee on the Status of Women recommends that the government develop and implement a plan in collaboration with provincial and municipal counterparts, as well as experts from the police, international organizations, and NGOs, prior to the opening of the 2010 Olympics to curtail the trafficking of women and children for sexual purposes during and after the duration of the games, and that the Chair report the adoption of this motion to the House without delay.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:31 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Clare Beckton made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:06 Pat Davidson, Vice-Chair, took the Chair.

 

At 5:11 Yasmin Ratansi took the Chair.

 

At 5:40 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
