The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 213, Wellington Building, the Chair, James Bezan, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, James Bezan, Ken Boshcoff, Hon. Wayne Easter, Guy Lauzon, Hon. Carol Skelton, Lloyd St. Amand, Paul Steckle, Brian Storseth and Ève-Mary Thaï Thi Lac.

 

Acting Members present: Gérard Asselin for André Bellavance and Bev Shipley for Larry Miller.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Conseil de la transformation agroalimentaire et des produits de consommation (CTAC): Sylvie Cloutier, Vice-President, Communications and Public Affairs; Christine Jean, Technical Director. Further Poultry Processors Association of Canada: Robert G. de Valk, General Manager. Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors Council: Robin Horel, President and Chief Executive Officer. Fédération québécoise des producteurs de fruits et légumes de transformation: Claude Lacoste, President; Gilles McDuff, General Manager. Canadian Meat Council: James Laws, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on "Product of Canada" claims .
 

James Laws, Robert G. de Valk, Robin Horel, Gilles McDuff, Sylvie Cloutier and Christine Jean made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee resumed to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Brian Storseth moved, — That the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food request that the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities ask the commission responsible for conducting the level of service review include the consideration of freight rates and their impact on Canadian grain shippers and farmers, within its mandate.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Wayne Easter moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “mandate” the following: “and that the motion be reported to the House”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Wayne Easter and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 4.

 

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food request that the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities ask the commission responsible for conducting the level of service review include the consideration of freight rates and their impact on Canadian grain shippers and farmers, within its mandate and that the motion be reported to the House.

 

The question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 11; NAYS: 0.

 

At 11:07 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
