The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:07 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Rob Merrifield, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dave Batters, Patricia Davidson, Nicole Demers, Ruby Dhalla, Rick Dykstra, Steven John Fletcher, Tina Keeper, Rob Merrifield and Penny Priddy.

 

Acting Members present: Jean-Claude D'Amours for Hon. Ken Dryden, Jean-Yves Laforest for Christiane Gagnon and Hon. Geoff Regan for Hon. Brenda Chamberlain.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier, Analyst; Sonya Norris, Analyst; Odette Madore, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Fraser Institute: Brett Skinner, Director, Pharmaceutical and Insurance Policy Research. Fraser Group: Ken Fraser, President. University of British Columbia: Barbara Mintzes, Centre for Health Services and Policy Research. Dalhousie University: Ingrid Sketris, Professor, College of Pharmacy.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study on Prescription Drugs.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — Pursuant to Standing Order 110(2), the Committee has taken note of the certificate of nomination of Weldon Newton, President of the Hazardous Materials Information Review Commission, as tabled in the House of Commons on Friday, May 12, 2006, and referred to the Standing Committee on Health; and has agreed to waive further consideration of the nomination.

 

Penny Priddy moved, — That the Standing Committee on Health call on the Minister of Health to work with Health Canada and the provinces to establish, within Health Canada, a national publicly-accessible database of innovation around reducing wait times within the public system.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 9; NAYS: 2.

 

On motion of Dave Batters, it was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $10,300.00, for the study on Prescription Drugs, be adopted.

 

On motion of Dave Batters, it was agreed, — That the proposed budget in the amount of $6,100.00, for the study on Childhood Obesity, be adopted.

 

At 12:42 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:46 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of a new strategy for the prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 

At 1:07 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
