The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Mario Silva, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Nathan Cullen, Hon. John Godfrey, Luc Harvey, Marcel Lussier, Mario Silva, Maurice Vellacott, Mark Warawa and Jeff Watson.

 

Acting Members present: Francis Scarpaleggia for Pablo Rodriguez.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Tim Williams, Analyst. House of Commons: Justin Vaive, Committee Clerk.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Chemical Producers' Association: Gordon Lloyd, Vice-President, Technical Affairs. Great Lakes United: Derek R. Stack, Executive Director, Member of CEN, ENGO Delegate. International Joint Commission: Jim Houston, Environmental Adviser; Joel Weiner, Senior Advisor. PollutionWatch: Hugh Benevides, Counsel, Canadian Environmental Law Association; Kapil Khatter, Director, Health and Environment.

 

Participants present: Department of the Environment: Cynthia Wright, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister, Environmental Stewardship Branch. Department of Health: Steve Clarkson, Director, Bureau of Risk and Impact Assessment.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and section 343 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, the Committee resumed the statutory review of the Act - Assessment of Substances: Virtual Elimination.
 

Gordon Lloyd, Derek R. Stack, Joel Weiner and Hugh Benevides made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:59 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
