The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Colin Mayes, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Harold Albrecht, Rod Bruinooge, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Marc Lemay, Yvon Lévesque, Colin Mayes, Hon. Anita Neville and Todd Norman Russell.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Mark Eyking for Hon. Larry Bagnell, Irene Mathyssen for Jean Crowder and Chris Warkentin for Brian Storseth.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Human Rights Commission: Harvey Goldberg, Team Leader, Strategic Initiatives, Knowledge Centre; Hélène Goulet, Secretary General; Sherri Helgason, Director, National Aboriginal Program, Prairies and Nunavut Region; David Langtry, Commissioner; Jennifer Lynch, Chief Commisioner.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, February 21, 2007, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-44, An Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act.
 

Jennifer Lynch made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12:46 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:52 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That briefs related to Bill C-44 be treated as public information.

 

Anita Neville moved, — That the news release related to the committee's study of Bill C-44 be distributed on the Canada News Wire Service, including to aboriginal-specific media.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 3.

 

At 1:08 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
