The Standing Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science and Technology met at 4:17 p.m. this day, in Room 269 West Block, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Michael Chong, Paul Crête, Brian Masse, Lynn Myers, Hon. Jerry Pickard, Werner Schmidt, Brent St. Denis and Bradley R. Trost.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sam Banks, Analyst; Dan Shaw, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Standards Council of Canada: Peter D. Clark, Executive Director. Department of Industry: Michael M. Binder, Assistant Deputy Minister, Spectrum, Information Technologies and Telecommunications; Larry Shaw, Director General, Telecommunications Policy Branch; Denise Walter, Senior Counsel, Legal Services; Steven Williamson, Senior Advisor, Regulatory Affairs.

 
Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the Committee commenced consideration of the certificate of nomination of Peter D. Clark to the position of Executive Director of the Standards Council of Canada which was referred to the Committee on Monday, April 4, 2005.
 

The witness made a statement and answered questions.

 

On motion of Werner Schmidt, it was agreed, — That the Chair report to the House that this Committee has examined the qualifications and competence of Peter D. Clark as Executive Director of the Standards Council of Canada and finds him competent to perform the duties of the position to which he has been nominated .

 

At 4:55 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:56 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Monday, February 7, 2005, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-37, An Act to amend the Telecommunications Act.
 

The Chair called Clause 1.

 

Michael Binder made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:54 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
