The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 269 West Block, the Chair, Anita Neville, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: France Bonsant, Paule Brunelle, Hon. Sarmite Bulte, Jean Crowder, Nina Grewal, Helena Guergis, Susan Kadis, Anita Neville, Russ Powers, Joy Smith, Hon. Paddy Torsney and Lynne Yelich.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Lydia Scratch, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Status of Women Canada: Florence Ievers, Coordinator.

 
Pursuant to Standing Orders 110 and 111, the Committee commenced consideration of the certificate of nomination of Florence Ievers to the position of Coordinator, Office of the Coordinator (Status of Women Canada) which was referred to the Committee on Friday, June 17, 2005.
 

Florence Ievers made a statement and answered questions.

 

On motion of Paddy Torsney, it was agreed, — That this Committee endorse the nomination of Florence Ievers as Coordinator, Office of the Coordinator (Status of Women Canada).

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of the Notice of Motion of Helena Guergis.

 

Helena Guergis moved, — That this Committee study ways in which Aboriginal women can be immediately guaranteed housing rights.

Debate arose thereon.

 

On motion of Paddy Torsney, it was agreed, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words after “Committee” with the words “encourage the government to act quickly on the recommendations contained in the Report of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Nothern Development entitled Walking Arm-in Arm to Resolve the Issue of On-Reserve Matrimonal Real Property”.

The question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to.

 

At 5:10 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
