The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met in a televised session at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C Centre Block, the Chair, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: André Bellavance, Bernard Cleary, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Gary Lunn, Pat Martin, Carol Skelton, David Smith, Lloyd St. Amand and Roger Valley.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Roy Cullen for Hon. Sue Barnes and Yvon Lévesque for André Bellavance.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst.

 
From the Senate: Hon. Charlie Watt, Senator.
 

Witnesses: Makivik Corporation: Pita Aatami, President; George Koneak, Elder; Johny Watt, Elder; Johnny Peters, Vice-President, Ressource Development; Mark Papiqatuk; Jocelyn Barrett, Legal Advisor; Lisa Koperqualuk; Adamie Alaku, Vice-President, Economic Development; Willie Cain. Royal Canadian Mounted Police: Kevin Vickers, Director General, National Contract Policing Branch, Community, Contract and Aboriginal Policing Services.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) , the Committee commenced its study on the slaughtering of Inuit dogs from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s.
 

Pita Aatami, George Koneak and Johny Watt made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 12 : 25 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12 : 30 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Kevin Vickers made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 1:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
