MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 6

Tuesday, February 25, 2003

The Special Committee on the Modernization and Improvement of the Procedures of the House of Commons met in camera at 5:36 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Don Boudria, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: The Hon. Don Boudria, Michel Gauthier, Monique Guay, Loyola Hearn, Stan Keyes, Dick Proctor, John Reynolds and Werner Schmidt.

Acting Member present: Libby Davies for Bill Blaikie.

In attendance: From the House of Commons: Diane Diotte, Procedural Clerk. From the Library of Parliament: James Robertson, Analyst.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the House of Commons on Thursday, November 28, 2002, the Committee resumed consideration of its study of the modernization and improvement of the procedures of the House of Commons (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, December 5, 2002).

Pursuant to its First Report, the Committee considered provisional Standing Orders regarding Private Members’ Business.

It was agreed, - That the Committee meet at 8:00 o’clock a.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2003 to consider a draft report in relation to Private Members’ Business.

The Committee considered its future business.

It was agreed, - That the Chair present a report to the House requesting: (a) that the deadline for the presentation of the Committee’s final report to the House be extended to June 13, 2003; (b) that the required staff accompany the Committee when it travels from place to place inside and outside Canada, as the Committee deems necessary.

It was agreed, - That the Committee travel to London the week of May 18, 2003 to visit Westminster in relation to its study.

At 5:52 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
