The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, The Hon. Andy Scott, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Chuck Cadman, The Hon. Hedy Fry, Marlene Jennings, Derek Lee, Paul Harold Macklin, John Maloney, Richard Marceau, John McKay, Pat O'Brien, The Hon. Andy Scott, Kevin Sorenson, Vic Toews.
Acting Member present: Svend Robinson for The Hon. Lorne Nystrom.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, senior analyst, Kristen Douglas, analyst.
Witnesses: From the Coalition of Canadian Liberal Rabbis: Steven Garten, Spiritual Leader, Temple Israel (Ottawa); Joanne Cohen, Coordinator. From the Westboro Baptist Church: Rev. William Oosterman. From the Seventh-Day Adventist Church: Barry Bussey, General Counsel, Public Affairs. As Individual: Nigel Flear; Steve Rawlinson.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed the study on marriage and the legal recognition of same-sex unions.
The witnesses made a statement and answered questions.
Mr. Lee moved, - That
eleven (11) members of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights be
authorized to travel to Vancouver, Edmonton, Moose Jaw (Sask), Steinbach
(Man.), Halifax, Sussex (N.B./N.-B.), Sudbury, Toronto, Iqaluit,
Montréal, Rimouski or elsewhere in Canada, in April and May 2003 in order
to hold public hearings in relation to its study on Marriage and the Legal
Recognition of Same-sex Unions and that the necessary staff do accompany the
Committee.
The question being put
on the motion, it was agreed to.
At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
