The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in a televised session at 4:15 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Rick Borotsik, Garry Breitkreuz, Mark Eyking, Howard Hilstrom, John Maloney, Larry McCormick, Louis Plamondon, Dick Proctor, Bob Speller, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.
Acting Member present: Pauline Picard for Marcel Gagnon.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, analyst.
Appearing: From the House of Commons: Hon. Lyle Vanclief, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.
Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food: Samy Watson, Deputy Minister; Bruce Deacon, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Management Branch; Howard Migie, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy Branch. From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Richard Fadden, President.
Pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), the Committee commenced the consideration of the Main Estimates 2003-2004, Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40, and of the Report on Plans and Priorities under AGRICULTURE AND AGRI-FOOD.
The Minister made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.
At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
