Meeting No. 27

Wednesday, June 5, 2002

The Sub-Committee on Human Rights and International Development of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 4:01 p.m. this day, in Room 307, West Block, the Chair, Beth Phinney, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Irwin Cotler, Antoine Dubé, Marlene Jennings, Beth Phinney.

Acting Member present: Maurice Vellacott for Deepak Obhrai.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: James Lee, Researcher.

Witness: From the International Eminent Persons Group: Georgette Gagnon, International Human Rights Lawyer, Technical Advisor, Slavery, Abduction and Forced Servitude in Sudan.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study of human rights, development and other matters in Sudan. (see Minutes of Proceedings, June 6, 2001, Meeting No. 7)

Georgette Gagnon made an opening statement and answered questions.

On motion of Marlene Jennings, it was agreed: 

- That the letter concerning Sudan and the G8 Summit addressed to the Prime Minister be approved and sent prior to the beginning of the summit in Kananaskis, this coming June 2002, with the amendment noted in the French version that the word “musclé” in paragraph five be replaced by the word “intensif”.

At 5:22 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
