Meeting No. 24

Wednesday, May 1st, 2002

The Sub-Committee on Human Rights and International Development of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:41 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Beth Phinney, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Irwin Cotler, Antoine Dubé, Marlene Jennings, Beth Phinney, Svend Robinson.

Acting Member present: Maurice Vellacott for Deepak Obhrai.

Other Members present: Jean Augustine, Keith Martin.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: James Lee, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: John McNee, Assistant Deputy Minister (Portfolio: Africa and Middle East); Alan Bones, Acting Director, Eastern and Southern Africa Division. From the Canadian International Development Agency: John Deyell, Regional Director, East Africa & the Horn, Africa and Middle Branch; John Jackson, Program Manager, Horn of Africa, Africa and Middle Branch; Susan Brown, Chief, Peacebuilding Unit, Multilateral Programmes Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Sub-Committee resumed its study on human rights, development and other matters in Sudan (see Minutes of Proceedings and Evidence, June 6, 2001, Meeting No.7).

John McNee and John Deyell made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:34 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
