Meeting No. 11

Wednesday, October 17, 2001

The Sub-Committee on Human Rights and International Development of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Acting-Chair, Colleen Beaumier, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Colleen Beaumier, Bill Casey, Irwin Cotler, Marlene Jennings, Svend Robinson.

Acting Members present: Keith Martin for Deepak Obhrai; Francine Lalonde for Antoine Dubé.

Other Members present: Maurice Vellacott; Dick Proctor; Joe Fontana.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee, Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers.

Witness: From the Episcopal Church of the Sudan: The Right Reverend Joseph Marona, Primate.  From the Anglican Church of Canada: The Right Reverend Peter R. Coffin, Bishop of Ottawa.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Sub-Committee commenced its examination of  the situation in Sudan.

Archbishop Joseph Marona made an opening statement and, with the witness, answered questions.

At 5:05 p.m., Marlene Jennings took the Chair.

At 5:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
