Wednesday, October 3, 2001

The Special Committee on non-medical use of drugs met at 6:34 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Paddy Torsney, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Carole-Marie Allard, Bernard Bigras, Derek Lee, Jacques Saada, Paddy Torsney and Randy White.

Acting Members present: Kevin Sorenson for Carol Skelton.

Other Members present: Bill Graham and Diane St-Jacques

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Chantal Collin and Marilyn Pilon, research officers.

Witnesses: From the Royal Canadian Mounted Police: R.G. Bob Lesser, Chief Superintendent, Officer in Charge, Drug Enforcement Branch, Federal Services Directorate. From Correctional Service Canada: Ross Toller, Acting Director General, Offender Programs and Reintegration; Julie Keravel, Director, Security Information and Emergency Management.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the House of Commons on Thursday, May 17, 2001, consideration of the factors underlying or relating to the non-medical use of drugs.

Bob Lesser and Ross Toller made statements and, with Julie Keravel, answered questions.

At 8:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
