THE HOUSE OF COMMONS STANDING COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC ACCOUNTS

OTTAWAMay 22, 2002 - Today, Mr. John Williams, MP, and Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Accounts, tabled the Committee’s 20th Report in the House of Commons.

The Committee deeply appreciates the work of the men and women who serve in Canada’s armed forces. Their devotion to duty and their sacrifice made in service of Canada and its citizens are an example to all. The Committee firmly believes that these men and women deserve the best support available.

Accordingly, the Committee reviewed Chapter 10 of the Auditor General’s December 2001 Report with a great deal of interest. This chapter contained the results of an audit of the Department of National Defence’s management of its most important military equipment.

The Committee discovered that the Department of Defence must improve its information systems and make better use of them in order to manage its in-service equipment properly. The Committee also wants Parliament to receive better information on the Department’s management of its major equipment. Eight recommendations included in the Report are intended to achieve these goals.
