Meeting No. 12

Thursday, April 5, 2001

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Reg Alcock, Mauril Bélanger, Pierre Brien, John Cannis, Bev Desjarlais, Marlene Jennings, Andy Savoy and Susan Whelan.

Acting Members present: John Richardson for Dan McTeague; Ivan Grose for Walt Lastewka; and, Peter Adams for Paddy Torsney.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Geoffrey P. Kieley and Dan Shaw, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Government Relations Institute of Canada: Tony Stikeman, President; Ian M. Faris, Director, Government Affairs, AT&T Canada. From GPC International: John Scott, Vice-President and General Council; Carole Presseault, Health Policy Manager, Canadian Nurses Association.

Pursuant to the (two) 2 days notice motion adopted on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 the Committee consideration of the following motion of Gilles Duceppe:

Pierre Brien moved,

--"That the money of the vote (1) allocated to the duties of the Ethics Counsellor under the heading "Industry" for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2002 be reduced by $1, 965, 000."

And the question being put on the motion, it was defeated by a show of hands:

YEAS: 1; NAYS: 6

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to the Statutory Review of the Lobbyists Registration Act.

Tony Stikeman and John Scott each made an opening statement and, with Ian Faris and Carole Presseault answered questions.

At 10:45 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
