NEWS RELEASE

OTTAWA -- March 23, 2001

The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities tabled its Report on Bill C-2, An Act to Amend the Employment Insurance Act and the Employment Insurance (Fishing) Regulations, on Friday, March 23, 2001.

The eighteen-member Committee commenced its study on Bill C-2 in February 2001 and during its hearings on the bill received testimony from more than 80 witnesses representing a variety of interests from across the country.

During the Committee’s hearings, many witnesses raised concerns about the Employment Insurance Act that went well beyond the scope of the bill. Unfortunately, the Committee was procedurally limited in addressing many of these concerns in its report on the bill. The Committee values all of the testimony it received during its study on Bill C-2 and, as a result, has agreed to consider other matters related to Employment Insurance in a supplementary report to be tabled no later than June 1, 2001.
