Meeting No. 21

Thursday, September 27, 2001

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:08 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block.

Members of the Committee present: Georges Farrah, Dominic LeBlanc, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer, Suzanne Tremblay, Tom Wappel.

Acting Members present: Charlie Hubbard for Sarkis Assadourian, Loyola Hearn for Gerald Keddy.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Fisheries and Oceans: Patrick Chamut, Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries Management; Jim Jones, Regional Director General, Gulf Fisheries Management Region.

The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of an Acting Chair.

It was agreed, - That Dominic LeBlanc assume the Chair.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded with a briefing on the implications of the September 17th, 1999 Supreme Court decision on R. v. Marshall on the Management of Fisheries in the Atlantic Region.

Pat Chamut made a statement and, with Jim Jones, answered questions.

At 11:01 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
