BERNARD PATRY ELECTED CHAIR OF
THE STANDING COMMITTEE ON
FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE
Ottawa, June 13, 2002 - The Standing House of Commons Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade has just chosen a new Chair: Dr Bernard Patry, MP for Pierrefonds--Dollard. Dr Patry has been a member of the Committee since he arrived on Parliament Hill in 1993.
The Committee, made up of 18 MPs from all parties, meets several times a week to study matters referred to it, for the most part by special order of the government. Individuals and groups appear before the Committee to give their opinions on proposed legislative measures and government policies. The Committee then reports to the House of Commons the recommendations it has formulated during its study. It also receives foreign parliamentary delegations and international delegations.
Dr Patry is no newcomer to committee work. He has chaired the Sub-committee on HIV/AIDS, and been a member of the standing committees on Industry, Indian and Northern Affairs, Health, and Procedure and House Affairs. For several months now he has served as Deputy Chair of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
“I am honoured by the confidence this choice shows,” Dr Patry said. “This is a very responsible position, and you can be sure I will do everything in my power to live up to Canadians’ expectations.”
In addition to this new duty, Dr Patry chairs the Canadian Section and is the International Vice-President of the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie, a consultative assembly of heads of State having the French language in common.
