The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:38 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Ivan Grose, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Paul DeVillers, Ivan Grose and John Maloney.
Acting Members present: Eric Lowther for Jim Abbott, Réal Ménard for Michel Bellehumeur and Svend Robinson for Peter Mancini.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Researcher; Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst.
Witnesses: From the Real Women of Canada: Gwendolyn Landolt, National Vice-President; Diane Watts, Researcher. From the Canadian Labour Congress: Nancy Riche, Secretary-Treasurer; Sue Genge, National Representative. From the "Coalition pour la reconnaissance des conjoints et conjointes de même sexe": Laurent McCutcheon, Spokesperson; Irene Demczhuc, Member. As an Individual: Iain Benson, Barrister & Solicitor.
Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Monday, February 21, 2000, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-23, An Act to modernize the Statutes of Canada in relation to benefits and obligations (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, February 29, 2000 , Meeting No. 27).
The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.
At 5:18 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
