The Standing Committee on Industry met at 9:09 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Vice-Chair, Walt Lastewska, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Pierre Brien, John Cannis, Marlene Jennings, Walt Lastewka, Gurbax Malhi, Ian Murray, Charlie Penson, Jerry Pickard and Susan Whelan.

Acting Members present: Michel Bellehumeur for Antoine Dubé and Mark Assad for Dan McTeague.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw and Geoffrey Kieley, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Bankers' Association: Lynda Brochu, Chair, Independent Business Committee, Vice-President, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises, Bank of Montreal; Ron Laursen, Vice-Chair, Independent Business Committee, Senior Vice-President, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises, The Bank of Nova Scotia; Peter Drake, Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist, TD Financial Group; Alan Young, Vice-President, Policy; Caroline Hubberstey, Advisor, Small Business.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), consideration of Business Lending to Small and Medium Sized Enterprises.

Alan Young, Lynda Brochu, Ron Laursen and Peter Drake made statements.

At 9:30 a.m., Susan Whelan took the Chair.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 11:02 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:16 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Wednesday, May 10, 2000, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-5, An Act to establish the Canadian Tourism Commission (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, May 30, 2000, Meeting No. 57).

Moved by Pierre Brien, - That the Standing Committee on Industry delay the clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-5, An Act to establish the Canadian Tourism Commission, until it has heard from the following witnesses: the Minister of Industry, Attractions Canada, Canada Economic Development and an expert in federal-provincial areas of jurisdiction in connection with tourism (from the Department of Justice or Intergovernmental Affairs).

And debate arising thereon;

At 11:58 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:40 p.m., the sitting resumed.

With unanimous consent Pierre Brien moved that the motion be amended by removing the words "Canada Economic Development".

After debate, the motion as amended, was agreed to.

At 12:43 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
