Meeting No. 30

Tuesday, March 28, 2000

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 9:27 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Charles L. Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Charles L. Caccia, Marlene Catterall, Nick Discepola, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Gurmant Grewal, Dennis Gruending, John Herron, Joe Jordan, Karen Kraft Sloan, Julian Reed.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Monique Hébert; Christine Labelle and Linda Webster, Research Officers.

The Committee discussed its future business.

Gurmant Grewal moved -That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and in the context of the Sustainable Development Strategy for the Department of Foreign affairs and International Trade tabled in the House of Commons on December 10, 1997, pursuant to an Act to Amend the Auditor General's Act, (1995), the Committee undertake an examination of the environmental assessments carried out by the Export Development Corporation in projects such as CANDU reactor construction in China, mining projects in Peru and Siberia, metal smelters in Latin America, petroleum refineries in the Persian Gulf and along Mexico's coastline, and hydro electric dam projects in China, and that the Minister of International Trade and the Chairman and President of the Export Development Corporation be called to appear.

After debate the question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following division:

At 9:42 a.m. by unanimous consent, the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee resumed its study on the management and use of pesticides in Canada including an evaluation of the performance of the Pest Management Regulatory Agency in preventing pollution and in protecting the environment and human health (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, October 26,1999 (Meeting no. 1)).

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

At 10:52 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
