Thursday, May 4, 2000
The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 9:16 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Leon Benoit, David Price and Andrew Telegdi.
Acting Member present: Karen Kraft Sloan for Joe Fontana.
Other Member present: Colleen Beaumier.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Joan Atkinson, Acting Deputy Minister, Policy and Program Development; Dougall Aucoin, Acting Director General, Selection; Kathleen O'Connor, Director, Service Line Support, Selection; Jean Roberge, Director General, International Region.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study relating to Immigration Behind the Numbers (Benefits to Canada, Social and Economic effects, etc.).
Joan Atkinson made an audio visual presentation and, with Dougall Aucoin, answered questions.
At 10:15 a.m., Andrew Telegdi took the Chair.
Questioning continued;
At 10:25 a.m., the Committee adjourned until 3:30 p.m.,Wednesday, May 10, 2000.
