Monday, May 10, 1999

The Sub-Committee on Tax Equity for Canadian Families with Dependent Children of the Standing Committee on Finance met at 1:34 p.m. this day, in Gallery II, Empire Landmark Hotel and Conference Centre, Vancouver, the Chair, Nick Discepola, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Serge Cardin, Nick Discepola, Michelle Dockrill, Paul Forseth, John Herron and Paul Szabo.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Julie Cusson, Analyst.

Witnesses: From the Focus on the Family: Darrel Reid, President; Jim Sclater, Director of Public Policy. As Individual: Leslie Zenger; Paul Kershaw, PHD Student, University of British Columbia; John Richards, Professor, Simon Fraser University. From the Real Women of B.C.: Laurie Geschke, Vice-President; Doris Rankin, Board Member; Cecilia Van-Dehn, Member. As Individual: Eleanor Girard; Father Joseph Hattie, Archdiocese of Vancouver; Tom Walker. From the Canada Family Action Coalition: Lucinda Cullen.

Pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Finance, dated March 17, 1999, the Sub-Committee resumed its study on Tax Fairness for Canadian Families with Dependent Children.

Darrell Reid and Jim Sclater from Focus on the Family and Leslie Zenger made opening statements and answered questions.

Paul Kershaw and John Richards made opening statements and answered questions.

Laurie Geschke from Real Women of B.C. and Eleanor Girard made opening statements and with the other witnesses from Real Women of B.C., answered questions.

Father Joseph Hattie from the Archdiocese of Vancouver and Tom Walker made opening statements and answered questions.

Lucinda Cullen from the Canada Family Action Coalition made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 5:24 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
