Wednesday, March 3, 1999

The Sub-Committee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Sarmite Bulte, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, André Bachand, Sarmite Bulte, Murray Calder, Charlie Penson, Benoît Sauvageau, Bob Speller.

Acting Member(s) present: Monique Guay for Benoît Sauvageau.

Other Members present: Darrel Stinson; Larry McCormick.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: The Hon. Sergio Marchi, Minister for International Trade.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Kathryn McCallion, Assistant Deputy Minister, International Business, Passport and Consular Affairs; George Haynal, Assistant Deputy Minister - Americas; Paul Durand, Director General, Latin America and Caribbean Bureau; Claude Carrière, Director, Tariffs and Market Access Division.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee continued its examination of Canada's priority interests in the FTAA process. (See Minutes of Proceedings of February 4, 1999, Meeting 87).

The Minister made an opening statement and, with Kathryn McCallion and Claude Carrière, answered questions.

At 4:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
