The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans’ Affairs and the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met, in camera, at 3:38 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 362-E, East Block, the Chairs, Robert Bertrand and Bill Graham, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Hec Clouthier, Judi Longfield, John O’Reilly, Dick Procter, John Richardson and Bob Wood.
Acting Members present: Byron Wilfert for David Pratt; Rob Anders for Art Hanger.
Members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade present: Jean Augustine, Réginald Bélair, Bill Graham, Ted McWhinney, Daniel Turp.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee, Gerald Schmitz and Michel Rossignol, Research Officers.
Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence and Veterans’ Affairs: Major Yvan Desy, J-3 Plans and Operations; Major R.S. Williams, National Defence Intelligence Centre; Sergeant Bilodeau. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Guy Archambault, Deputy Director, Southeast Europe Relations Division; Diane Harper, Desk Officer, Regional Security and Peacemaking; Geoffrey Gartshore, Desk Officer, NATO (Bosnia); Eileen Olexiuk, Deputy Director, Reconstruction of Former Yougoslavia, Southern Europe Division.
Pursuant to Standing Orders 108(1) (a) and 108(2), the Committee convened a joint meeting with the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade for a briefing session on the Stabilization Force (SFOR) in Bosnia.
It was agreed, --That in relation to its examination of Canada’s future participation in the Stabilization Force (SFOR) in Bosnia, while members of the Committee are travelling to Italy and Bosnia with a delegation from the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans’ Affairs, the Committee share the cost of a dinner briefing given by the base commanders of Aviano on November 7, 1997.
The witnesses made opening statements and, with Sergeant Bilodeau from the Department of National Defence and Veterans’ Affairs, answered questions.
At 5:13 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
