MINUTES OF PROCEEDING
(Meeting No. 55)

THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 1998

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in a televised session at 9:01 o’clock a.m., this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Robert Bertrand, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Leon Benoit, Robert Bertrand, Hec Clouthier, Maurice Godin, Peter Goldring, Judi Longfield, David Pratt, David Price, George Proud and John Richardson.

Acting Members present: Ghislain Lebel for Pierrette Venne.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Michel Rossignol, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Lt.-Col. R.G. McLellan, Special Project Officer for COS ADM (Personnel), Care of Injured Personnel and their Families Review; Gen. J.M.G. Baril, Chief of Defence Staff; Col. Scott Cameron, Director, Medical Services. From the Royal Canadian Legion: R.E. Keast, Assistant Director Service Bureau, Dominion Command. From the Canadian Association of Veterans in UN Peace-keeping: John Gardam, Acting President. From the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association: Jim MacMillan-Murphy, Member.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of a Review of the Social and Economic Challenges Facing Members of the Canadian Forces – Care of Injured, Retired and Veterans.

Gen. J.M.G. Baril and Lt.-Col. R.G. McLellan made opening statements and, with the other witness, answered questions.

R.E. Keast, John Gardam and Jim MacMillan-Murphy made opening statements and answered questions.


At 12:35 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
