Meeting No. 115

Thursday, May 13, 1999

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Gordon Earle, Peter Goldring, René Laurin, Judi Longfield, Pat O'Brien, John O'Reilly, David Pratt, George Proud, John Richardson and Bob Wood.

Acting Members present: John Cummins for Jim Hart and Elsie Wayne for David Price.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Department of Veterans Affairs Canada: The Hon. Fred Mifflin, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency).

Witnesses: From the Department of Veterans Affairs Canada: David Nicholson, Deputy Minister. From the Veterans Review & Appeal Board: Brian Chambers, Chairman.

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Monday, March 1st, 1999, the Committee proceeded to the consideration of the Main Estimates 1999-2000 (Part II) - Votes 1, 5 and 10 under Veterans Affairs and Report on Plans and Priorities (Part III).

The Minister made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:39 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
