TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1997

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 3:35 o’clock p.m., this day, in room 362 of the East Block, the Chair, Robert Bertrand, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Leon Benoit, Robert Bertrand, Hec Clouthier, Art Hanger, Pat O’Brien, John O’Reilly, David Pratt, David Price, Dick Proctor, John Richardson and PierretteVenne.

Acting Members present: Joe Jordan for Judi Longfield.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Michel Rossignol, Research Officers.

Appearing: The Hon. Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Louise Fréchette, Deputy Minister; General Maurice Baril, Chief of Defence Staff; Lieutenant-General D. Kinsman, Assistant Deputy Minister (Personnel).

Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Thursday, October 23, 1997, the Committee proceeded to a study of the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1998.

The Minister made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:30 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
