MEETING No. 67

Monday, May 11, 1998

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Michel Bellehumeur, Garry Breitkreuz, Shaughnessy Cohen, Paul DeVillers, Derek Lee, Peter G. MacKay, John Maloney, Peter Mancini, John McKay, Jack Ramsay and Andrew Telegdi.

Acting Members present: Howard Hilstrom for Jack Ramsay, Rob Anders for Garry Breitkreuz.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst, and Nancy Holmes, Research Officer.

Appearing: The Hon. Anne McLellan, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Witnesses: From the Department of Justice: George Thomson, Deputy Minister; Judith Bellis, Senior Counsel, Judicial Affairs Unit.

The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, April 21, 1998, being read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-37, An Act to amend the Judges Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

The Chair called Clause 1.

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 4:00 p.m., the Vice-Chair John Maloney took the Chair.

At 5:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
