Thursday, May 7, 1998
The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met in camera, at 9:45 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Eleni Bakopanos, Michel Bellehumeur, Garry Breitkreuz, Shaughnessy Cohen, Sheila Finestone, Paul E. Forseth, Derek Lee, Peter G. MacKay, John Maloney, John McKay et Andrew Telegdi.
Acting Members present: Denis Coderre for Paul DeVillers, Yvon Charbonneau for Eleni Bakopanos, Aileen Carroll for Sheila Finestone.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst, Marilyn Pilon and Nancy Holmes, Research Officers.
Witnesses: From the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada: Bruce Phillips, Commissioner; Julien Delisle, Executive Director; Holly A. Harris, Legal Counsel.
The Committee considered its future business.
It was proposed, -- That the witnesses list for Bill C-37 be approved.
After debate, the list, as amended, carried.
It was agreed, -- That the Committee convene a meeting on the draft report regarding the provisions and the implementation of Bill C-104 (1995), Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at 3:30 p.m.
At 10:17 a.m., the sitting was suspended.
At 10:25 a.m., by unanimous consent, the sitting resumed in public.
The Committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference of Thursday, February 26, 1998, relating to the Main Estimates for 1998-99 (See Minutes of Proceedings, Monday, April 20, 1998, Meeting No.50).
By unanimous consent, the Chair called Vote 40, under JUSTICE.
Bruce Phillips made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.
At 12:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
