Wednesday, February 18, 1998
The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Shaughnessy Cohen, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Shaughnessy Cohen, Nick Discepola, Derek Lee, Peter G. MacKay, John Maloney and Jack Ramsay.
Acting Member present: Chuck Cadman for Paul E. Forseth.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst, Nancy Holmes, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario: Renee Pomerance, Counsel, Crown Law Office Criminal; Dr. James Young, Assistant Deputy Minister, Public Safety Division. From the "Barreau du Québec" : Carole Brosseau, Lawyer; Anne-Marie Boisvert, Member; Guiseppe Battista, Member.
Pursuant to its order of reference of November 4, 1997, the Committee continued its consideration of Bill C-3, An Act respecting DNA identification and to make consequential amendments to the Criminal Code and other Acts and of provisions and operation of Bill C-104 (1st Session, 35th Parliament) forensic DNA testing (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Wednesday, February 4, 1998, meeting No. 23).
James Young and Renee Pomerance made a statement and answered questions.
At 4:47 p.m., the sitting was suspended.
At 4:56 p.m., the sitting resumed.
Carole Brosseau and Anne-Marie Boisvert made a presentation and, with Guiseppe Battista, answered questions.
At 5:36 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
