MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 81

Tuesday, May 4, 1999

The Standing Committee on Health met in camera at 9:23 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Elinor Caplan, Reed Elley, Gurmant Grewal, Ovid Jackson, Maria Minna, Bernard Patry, Pauline Picard, Karen Redman, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member present: Murray Calder for Dan McTeague.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier; Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

The Committee considered its future business.

It was agreed, -- That the following subjects be added to the list of matters that might be taken up by the Committee at a later date.

  • direct to consumer advertising of pharmaceuticals;
  • genetically engineered or altered food products;
  • waiting lists and bed closures in hospitals;
  • breast cancer;
  • Report of the Auditor General of Canada: Other Audit Observations. Department of National Defence and Health Canada - Anti-malaria Drug;
  • Report by Information Commissioner of Canada - Health Canada Report Card on Compliance with Response Deadlines Under the Access to Information Act, March 1999;
  • Request by the Federation of Newfoundland Indians to Appear before the Standing Committee on Health;
  • Request from the Mood Disorders Association of Ontario and Toronto that the Standing Committee on Health hold hearings on the state of health care for those suffering from mental illness in Canada.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee devote the month of May to the study of the Main Estimates 1999 - 2000 under Health and to the Health Canada Report on Plans and Priorities.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee undertake its study of Bill C-247, an Act to amend the Criminal Code (genetic manipulation) at the beginning of June.

At 10:35 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
