The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 9:15 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Elinor Caplan, Gurmant Grewal, Ovid Jackson, Maria Minna, Bernard Patry, Pauline Picard, Karen Redman, Maurice Vellacott, Joseph Volpe, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member present: Keith Martin for Reed Elley

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier; Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the The Hospital for Sick Children: Dr. Sam Shemie, Principal investigator; Dr. Diane Hebert, Expert in Transplantation. From the Delaware Valley Transplant Program: Howard Nathan, Executive Director. From the Toronto General Hospital: Colleen Shelton, Clinical Nurse Specialist. From the Canadian Healthcare Association: Kathryn Tregunna, Director, Policy Development; Larry Odegard, Executive Director. Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the State of Organ and Tissue Donation in Canada. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Tuesday, December 1, 1998).

Dr. Diane Hebert, Dr. Sam Shemie, Howard Nathan, Dr. Gordon L. Crelinsten, Kathryn Tregunna, Larry Odegard, and Colleen Shelton each made statements and answered questions.

At 11:05 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:26 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Dr. Rosalie Starzomski, Rosella Jefferson, Sharon Nield, Liz Anne Gillam-Eisen, Linda Peltier and Dr. Michel Brazeau made statements and with others, answered questions.

At 1:08 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
