Meeting No. 70

Thursday, March 11, 1999

The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 9:15 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Elinor Caplan, Reed Elley, Gurmant Grewal, Ovid Jackson, Maria Minna, Pauline Picard, Rose-Marie Ur, Maurice Vellacott and Joseph Volpe.

Acting Members present: Svend Robinson for Judy Wasylycia Leis; Keith Martin for Maurice Velacott; Lynn Myers for Dan McTeague.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Government of British Columbia: The Hon. Penny Priddy, Minister of Health; Dr. Neil Fatin, Medical Consultant; From the B.C. New Democrat Government Caucus: Ed Conroy, Member of the Legislative Assembly, British Columbia; From the British Columbia Transplant Society: Bill Barrable, Chief Executive Officer; From the Alberta Health: Prudence Taylor, Project Team Leader, Health Strategies Division; From the Capital Health Authority / The H.O.P.E. Program: Kimberley Young, Transplant Education Coordinator; From the Gateway Information Facility for Transplant Services: Calvin Lee, Chief Operating Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the State of Organ and Tissue Donation in Canada (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Tuesday, December 1st, 1998).

The British Columbia Health Minister, the Honorable Penny Priddy; Ed Conroy and Bill Barrable each made statements and, with Dr. Neil Fatin, answered questions.

At 10:40 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:48 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Prudence Taylor, Kimberley Young and Calvin Lee each made statements and answered questions.

At 11:59 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:04 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

At 12:38 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
