Thursday, February 18, 1999

The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 9:13 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Elinor Caplan, Reed Elley, Gurmant Grewal, Ovid Jackson, Dan McTeague, Maria Minna, Bernard Patry, Karen Redman, Maurice Vellacott, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member present: Keith Martin for Gurmant Grewal.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witnesses:From the Eye Bank of Canada: Dr. David S. Rootman, Director; From the Canadian Bone Marrow Registry: Dr. Hans Messner, Director; From the University of Alberta: Dr. John Akabutu, Medical Director, Alberta Cord Blood Bank; From the QE II Tissue Bank Health Sciences Centre: Dr. Michael Gross, Medical Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the State of Organ and Tissue Donation in Canada (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Tuesday, December 1, 1998).

The witnesses each made statements and answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:21 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

At 12:40 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
