Meeting No. 59

Thursday, December 3, 1998

The Standing Committee on Health met at 9:12 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Elinor Caplan, Reed Elley, Grant Hill, Ovid Jackson, Maria Minna, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member(s) present: Raymond Bonin for Robert Nault, Lynn Myers for Dan McTeague.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to consider Chapter 12 (Creation of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency) of the September 1998 Report of the Auditor General of Canada.

Witness(es):From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: Maria Barrados, Assistant Auditor General; Neil Maxwell, Principal, Audit Operations Branch; John Mayne, Principal, Audit Operations Branch; From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Ron Doering, President, Tom Beaver, Executive Director, Corporate Audit and Review; From Health Canada: Dr. Karen Dodds, Special Assistant to the Director general, Policy and Integration, Food Directorate.

Maria Barrados, Ron Doering and Dr. Karen Dodds each made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 11:02 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
