Thursday, November 26, 1998

The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Elinor Caplan, Grant Hill, Ovid Jackson, Dan McTeague, Maria Minna, Robert D. Nault, Pauline Picard, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member(s) present: Lynn Myers for Aileen Carroll.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witness(es):From Health Canada: David Dodge, Deputy Minister; Robert S. Lafleur, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister; Ian Potter, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Promotion and Programs Branch; Dr. Joe Losos, Assistant Deputy Minister; Orvel Marquardt, Director General, Departmental Planning and Financial Administration.

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(5) and (6), and its Order of Reference dated October 29, 1998, the Committee proceeded with consideration of the Supplementary Estimates (B) for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1999. Votes 1b, 5b, 10b, 15b, 20b and 25b.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded with consideration of the Health Canada Performance Report for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1998.

David Dodge, the Deputy Minister of Health, made a statement, and with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 11:28 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
