The Standing Committee on Health met at 9:07 o’clock a.m, this day, in
room 362-E , East Block , the Chair, Beth Phinney, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Claude Drouin, Maurice Dumas, Grant Hill, Lynn Myers, Maurice Vellacott, Joseph Volpe, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore, Nancy Miller-Chenier and Gérald Lafrenière, Research Officers.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of natural health products. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Thursday, November 20, 1997.)
Witnesses: From the Ginseng Growers Association of Canada: Michael F. Atkins, President; Dr. Tom Francis, Nutritional Scientist, University of Toronto; Dr. Chung-Ja C. Jackson, Natraceutical, Laboratory Sciences Division, Guelph Centre for Functional Foods; Dr. Dennis Awang; Gary Kakis, Nutritional Consultant. From Richter’s Herbs: Conrad Richter, Director. From the Chamber of Chinese Herbal Medicine of Canada: Chi-To Wung, President; Andy Shih, Vice-President; Lawrence Cheng, Vice-President; Tony Cheung, Vice-President. From the Kiu Shun Trading Company Ltd.: Albert Fok, President; Mang Wah Leung, Sales Manager. From the Canadian Chinese Herbal Professional & Merchants Association: Lin-Hoi Yu, Chairman; Sunny Li, Secretary.
The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.
